Why Do You Blog ?

I’ve been doing a lot of reading this morning (like any other morning) and came across an interesting post by Jeff Bullas titled Why Do You Blog’ (hence the title of my post since there was really no other way of putting it)  which I highly recommend you all read.

I have taken the liberty of putting together a little diagram to summarize what Jeff has said :

why do you blog

I’ve been blogging for almost 2 years now .. seriously since about 1.5 year .. and I’ve never really thought about ‘why’ I blog .. I blog because I want to.  There’s no real hidden purpose behind it.  It’s more about the ability to be able to express myself and to voice out an opinion.  I’m not a political blogger nor am I a business blogger .. I don’t fall into the dating / relationship blogger category (but am flattered that a few of my Twitter friends consider me to be so) ..

I suppose I blog for all of the above illustrated reasons – more so in the personal blogger category because I tend to write about a variety of things .. hence the name Sporadic Reflections for my blog.

I never thought I’d make money from blogging.  Hats off to those who make a living as bloggers.  I just don’t know if I would be able to do that.  I mean I love to write but I barely have the time that would even remotely qualify me to be able to make enough money to sustain myself.  Having said that, I have over the past few months enrolled myself with various sites that pay bloggers for content.  I’m also quite proud of the fact that I’ve managed to make about $100 from doing what I enjoy in my spare time – writing – or to say it correctly – by blogging.

Everyone has their own reasons behind why they choose to blog – after all it’s about finding your blogger voice.  As an events & wedding planner – I have been meaning to put together a few articles that I feel would be helpful for brides and grooms and have them put up on my blog.  I’ve even thought about having a separate blog just for that.  I’m still in the researching phase for that – but it’s something I want to do and hope to have up and running soon enough.  Alternatively I will just wait until my company website is live and have the blog as a part of that.

I recommend business blogs to all my clients who come to me for marketing consulting.  I am very pro social media marketing and encourage clients to delve into it if they haven’t already as I feel its a better medium for them.  There are a plethora of ways of business to promote their brand and their products by way of blogging and incorporating a few other social media mediums and use it voice vitaminsto their advantage.

MySpace introduced blogging quite a few years ago – and created an avenue for music artists to put up their latest projects, gigs, their new music, and also enable them to interact with their fans.  There are a growing number of photo blogs out there that lets photography enthusiasts show off their talents and lets the rest of cyber space enough their photography.  Some of us have never seen the images captured and probably never will.

Now that I have found my blogger voice – what about you ? Have you found your blogger voice ? And lastly I’ll leave you with this thought – does a public or private blog affect your writing ?

So why do you blog ? Would love to know your thoughts on this and if you have taken the time to read any of the other posts linked to this article – don’t forget to leave a comment :)

Hey! Well the web is connecting this world in a crazy way. Filtering of people(in terms of ideas, interests etc) is happening faster than ever imagined before. A public blog is the biggest blessing, i feel! But at the same time, growing cyber access is making privacy a big issue. This is only going to increase the voyeurism already prevalent in the society. Observe the trend. How much time do we spend on twitter/facebook/blogger compared to a few years back. The benefits of this medium are brilliant. But its growing too fast. And anything that grows too fast is dangerous.

I see myself as a writer who blogs. Not sure if that makes much sense.

If it were ten years ago (or 20 or 30) I'd still be writing every day, still searching for an audience. The medium would just be different. It's 2010 (and like you I'm coming up on my 2 yr anniversary) and the obvious medium for any writer is blogging.

I blog because I am arrogant. And because I want to improve my writing. But mostly because I am arrogant,.. sigh.

I have a blog, alright. But having and doing are completely different things, right? I am someone that has a blog, not a blogger in the traditional sense.

I have to laugh when Wednesdays roll around...there's a lot of wordless stuff going on, that day. Kind of makes me feel right at home:)

@ Avinash .. welcome to my blog & thanks for sharing your thoughts :) There is definitely a growing concern on privacy issues however if one is going to put their info out in cyberspace - it leaves little to be private off .. Although I do get the type of voyeurism you are talking about.

@ Simone .. ahhh you have graced my comment wall :) so happy !! I like that .. a writer who blogs :) I still have a lot to learn from you .. I love the way you blog / write - its open, honest and true to yourself .. and that makes you one of my fave bloggers !

@ WSG .. LMAO ! classic bitch fab answer ! darling its not that you are arrogant .. its just that you are you and really you deserve a space out there in cyber world ! And your writing has a very unique style .. I love the way you are able to capture depth & hidden meanings and yet restrict the number of words you use - especially with your poetry

@ Nipsy ... you are human ! I saw your pics and you would have been the cutest robot I've seen in a while :P I like all the reasons you blog for :) and I keep hearing people on WP having issues .. no platform is perfect is it

@ Christine .. hey & welcome to my blog (at least its the first time I think you're coming by) .. I see where you're coming on this .. just because one has a blog doesn't make them a traditional blogger per say .. so in essence they are people who want to & like to blog but still crossing the threshold from newbie blogger to 'been there done that' blogger .. ? Am I right here ? Thanks for that new perspective :)

I started blogging because dating had my friends and I scratching our heads and thinking "wtf? Did that just happen?" a lot (hence we referred to it as The Twilight Zone). As a result of blogging about our experiences, and reading some of the fab content out there, I realized we are NOT alone. The Twilight Zone has us all...

That said, I've come away somewhat from blogging about dating, and pretty much talk about whatever comes to mind. I'm interested in open minds, and hearts, and discussions. In challenging people to think outside the box, get involved, be more aware, more compassionate, more thoughtful, more honest. And more HAPPY with the lives they have.

I would say I'm taking the scenic route, however.

I did start out blogging anonymously, so I could say what I want about people I know. I think I would censor myself in regards to using people as examples more if my friends knew I blogged. But... the more I write, the more I find my content being less connected to specifics in my own life that I would want to keep private.

To improve my writing and find an audience would be my answer.

You have got a great blog. Liked your "featured post" concept.

@WomenAreFromMars aka NikkiB ... thanks for your sharing your thoughts :) I'm glad you stopped by hehe

I've noticed that some bloggers are very public about themselves and yet quite anonymous; and then there's the out-an-out there blogger who can you put a face to. I (still) do write anonymously but since I share my posts on FaceBook - its not anonymous to my friends but then its anonymous (albeit my online persona)to my Twitter / Blogger friends cos they have never seen my face (unless they start to Google my company and then they find me hehe)

That then raises the question of how does ones' public / private blog affect their writing style ?

Originally my blog started out as an online diary. I had spoken to a life coach about my 'eternal singledom' and one of the things she said was to stop taking dating so seriously. Make it more fun by writing a diary, or a blog... and here I am!

Now, I do it for fun and I'd say I'm become passionate about it too. However, that's just because of the blogging/Twitter community that I've now become a part of.

Interesting post!

Well my blog is about sharing, learning, helping and kind of an online diary too of my experiences in becoming a private pilot. Granted it's a not a popular subject but I'm really enjoying learning to fly and sharing of my experiences. I also started to blog to improve my writing skills and to just have fun even if no one wanted to read it.
